Building Your First Website
The very first thing you need to do to build a website is to get a domain name and the appropriate webspace. A domain name is like your home address, and is the name you want to give to your website (e.g. www.ingsray.com, or www.MagicEel.com), while a webspace is like your home. You can decide how much webspace you want to purchase, much like you can decide how big your home is, or how large your office premises would be.
You can look for a registrar, pay an annual fee, decide on your domain name and webspace, and the host would activate them for you. After you have settled your domain name and web host, the next step is to design the website.
As a complete beginner, you can use a WYSIWYG (“What You See Is What You Get”) web editor, which allows you to design your site visually, without having any technical knowledge.
Commercial web editors are usually quite expensive. One is Macromedia Dreamweaver, one of the most used, but also probably one of the most expensive editors around.
If you have a budget constraint, you can use this excellent free website builder, or use KompZer, also a free web editor. You can also find other free web editors on the Internet. Just do a Google search for ‘free web editors’.
An important part of web design is search engine readiness, which you need to be aware of from the start of designing your website. This means making it possible for the various search engines such as Google and Yahoo to rank your website in the first few pages. I will talk more about this later, but do take note.
After you have finished your website, test them in the latest versions of all the major browsers such as Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Opera, Safari and Google Chrome.
When your site is ready, you will need to promote it. I will discuss this as a separate issue later, so do check back again.
